Who are Voceros?

A Vocero is a student leader who uses their unique experiences to help improve the educational structure of STEM students. They are instrumental to the success of Project VOCES and have opportunities working in many leadership positions, helping to shape the academic community here at FIU. Coming from diverse backgrounds, Voceros use their distinct perspectives to help improve student outcomes and overall retention of course material. Their contributions help shape the academic journeys of current and future students, being the liaison between the student and institution.

Events and Activities

VOCES offers a variety of internships for Voceros to learn from, participating in areas such as student research, institutional change, and leadership roles. Their voices are woven throughout all VOCES activities, and their agency is an essential driver towards profound innovations to transform FIU’s approach to STEM student success. Some of the internships available to Voceros are:

STEM Education Research Projects

Voceros carry out STEM education research that especially targets issues that have or may impact their development. Voceros interested in these research opportunities may have the opportunity to work with tenured STEM education researchers at FIU, as well as several other team members. Following their experience, they will be expected to share their research results with the broader project community and have the opportunity to present at professional meetings and publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Student-Led ComPASS

sComPASS is a student-led structure that places Voceros as leaders of the institutional process for monitoring operational, instructional, and curricular needs. Modeled after ComPASS (Communication Protocol for Accountability and Strategic Support), an institutional process where the university uses data to drive institutional decisions as part of a continuous model of improvement, we offer opportunities towards leadership that can make a difference. Occurring annually in September, it will be attended by Voceros, project leadership, and top leadership at the department, college and institutional levels, giving Voceros a chance to network and expand their horizons.

STEM Student Steering Committee

The Steering Committee will serve as the bridge between the STEM education research outcomes and the Student ComPASS, providing guidance on investigations as well as feedback on completed analyses. This committee will be student-led and student-owned, initially composed of Voceros. Those interested in the committee will gain key analytical skills, providing important evaluations for the other branches of VOCES.
